The research done in the discipline of Social Work - Youth Empowerment was guided by Dr. A.J Christopher, Dept. of Social Work, Sacred Heart College, Tirupattur. The Chief Examiner was Dr. Vijayaraghavan, Principal, Madras School of Social Work, Chennai. There were about 130 participants consisting of PhD/M. Phil scholars, P.G. students, professors, former principals, heads of various departments, Salesians from Chennai and Trichy provinces, Fr. Thomas Anchukandam SDB (Provincial, Bangalore), Fr. Raju Philip (Rector, Don Bosco Sulthan Bathery), family members and friends. The study attempted to understand the psycho-social characteristics of the students who get actively involved in Student Politics: what attracts, what motivates them to stay on and what is their level of satisfaction in getting involved in political activities. The study was descriptive and analytical making use of several statistical tests. The samples consisted of 754 politically active students from various Government and Aided Colleges across Kerala. The result of the study showed that one of the major reasons for entry of politics into campuses is the inefficient way the college institution is run creating unnecessary reasons for students to get frustrated and agitated which makes them feel unattended, disrespected and victimized. The second reason is the temperaments of students, emanating from their own psycho-social backgrounds. It is not that the students are happy to be involved in politics as a good majority prefer to stay out of it and would not endorse its presence in the campuses. The reasons are evident: poor academic performance, loss of career, disapproval from family and teachers and inappropriate way the political activities are conducted. The study finally makes suggestions to the Government, Universities, Management of institutes of Higher Education, Parents, and students to look for alternate ways to keep the campuses student friendly, and maintain academic quality.
