A District Level Workshop on Missing Child Search & Homelink Network and Laws Related to Child Care & Protection was held at Municipal Conference Hall, Kasargod on July 2, 2011 from 09.30 am to 04.00 pm. The main resource person was Fr. Philp Parakatt (Member, State Selection Committee for Child Welfare Committees and Juvenile Justice Boards) who dealt with the topic of Enabling a Protective Environment for Child: a Right- Based Approach. In the session he presented various laws, policies and systems such as Convention on the Rights of the Child, Juvenile Justice Act 2000, the Commission for the Protection of the Child Rights Act, the Child Marriage Prohibition Act, the Child Labour (Abolition and Regulation) Act, various networks, etc. The official inaugural session was held at 10.50 am. The presidential address was rendered by Adv. Mani G Nair (Chairperson, CWC). The workshop was inaugurated by Shri. T E Abdulla (Municipal Chairman). In the inaugural speech he admitted the need for such a network in the State. Shri. Madhusudhanan (DYSP, DCRB, Kasaragod), Rev. Mathai Joseph (Nodal Director CHILDLINE, Kasaragod), Mr. PK Kunhiraman (JJB Member, Kasaragod), and Shri. Kookanam Rahiman (Director, Support Organization, CHILDLINE) felicitated the gathering. The vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Jobi Kondoor (HLK & MCS Project Coordinator). Delegates from various organizations participated in the workshop. The post-lunch Session began with a presentation on HLK MCS Project by Mr. Jobi Kondoor. Soon after that presentation a panel discussion on Creating `Kasargod: a Child-Friendly District` took place. The panelists were experienced in child-related works. Adv. Mani G Nair (Chairperson of CWC), Rev. Mathai Joseph, Mr. Kookanam Rahiman, Shri. T P Rajan (District labour Officer), Sr. Lilly Maria (School Counselors` Representative), Smt. Bhanumathy (SI, Special Juvenile Police Unit), and Shri. Muhammad Mubarak Haji (President, District Orphanages Association) led the discussion. Fr. Philip Parakatt moderated. The participants were the heads of the Children`s Homes in the district, PTA presidents and Principals of the Schools, School Counselors, members of CWC, JJB and Special Juvenile Police Unit, and officers from Social Welfare Department and Labour Department. They were given time to express their opinions and suggestions about Creating Kasargod a child-friendly District: Almost all the participants shared their experience and views. The final vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Subin Zachariah, (Coordinator, CHILDLINE Kasaragod).
