Annual meeting of the International Volunteers placed in the two states of Karnataka and Kerala was held at BREADS (the Development Office of the Province), Bangalore on February 11 & 12th, 2011. All the 12 volunteers, hailing from Poland, the United Kingdom, the USA, and Germany and currently rendering service in six projects, namely, Prakashpalaya, Davengere, Deodurga, Hospet, Palluruthy and Ajjanahalli, participated in the programme. These volunteers have come through the Salesian agencies in their respective countries and have committed themselves to a year of service in the province. They have completed about 5 months in the various projects. The meeting helped the volunteers to share their experience as well as to know more about other projects. It also served as a time of interim evaluation.
Rev Fr Thomas Anchukandam (INK Provincial) interacted with the group, appreciating as well as thanking them for their service. They shared with the Provincial their experience in the Salesian communities in the province. He invited them to consider themselves as partners in the realization of the Salesian Project of Don Bosco for the young. Fr George Mathew, the Provincial Economer, developed the theme of volunteerism. Documentaries on the various activities of the province were screened which helped them to know more about other projects.
On the second day, the volunteers had an outing to Bannerghatta National Park where they were thrilled to see several wild animals including lions, tigers, leopards, bisons, bears and elephants.
In the afternoon, they visited BOSCO Mane, one of the rehabilitation centres for street children. The complex work that BOSCO is doing for the street children in Bangalore was explained to them by the director of BOSCO Mane. The inmates of BOSCO Mane had a very warm interaction with the volunteers.
Next year, about 14 volunteers are expected to be placed through BREADS.
