News reported by: BIS Correspondent, Mumbai

BOSCOM South Asia, in collaboration with the Social Communication sector of the Mumbai Province, released the Principles and Guidelines for Personal and Apostolic Use of Social Media in Mumbai on October 24, in the presence of Fr Biju Michael, General Councillor for South Asia.

The document was presented to Fr Ashley Miranda, Provincial of Mumbai and Provincial in charge of Communication for South Asia; Fr Peter Gonsalves, the first National Coordinator of BOSCOM-INDIA; and Fr Mylin Noronha, Social Communication Delegate of the Mumbai Province. Fr Tony Pellissery, Director, Mission Poverty Eradication, South Asia, together with the heads of Province Development Offices from across South Asia, attended the event.

Introducing the guidelines, BOSCOM South Asia Coordinator Fr Bastin Nellissery said the document seeks to establish a common framework for personal and institutional engagement on social media. It aims to help Salesians navigate the opportunities and challenges of digital communication with discernment, integrity, prudence and a strong sense of responsibility.

Fr. Bastin emphasised that the guidelines ensure that the online conduct reflects the values of consecrated life, the Salesian charism, and the Congregation’s commitment to young people. He thanked the Provincial of Mumbai and his team for their support, as well as the Social Communication members of the Mumbai Province and BOSCOM delegates, who contributed their insights, experience, and suggestions in preparing the document.

Fr Biju Michael thanked Fr Ashley and the communcation members for taking the initiative to develop the guidelines and for recognising the importance of responsible engagement in the digital environment.

The release of the guidelines calls on every Salesian, community, and institution across South Asia to act. Salesians are encouraged to put these principles into practice, ensuring every post, comment, image, and digital interaction reflects Gospel values, respect for human dignity, and the spirit of Don Bosco. The challenge is to move beyond online presence to build genuine relationships, accompany young people in the digital world, and use social media as a force for hope, dialogue, and transformation.
