‘Dance of Fortune’ Highlights Values Beyond Wealth
'Dance of Fortune,’ a drama written by Fr Tom Karthik, SDB, was staged by the Post-Novitiate students at Dimapur, highlighting poverty, wealth, family, choices and the unpredictable nature of fortune.
Through drama, music, dance and instrumental performances, the production conveyed that education, discipline, perseverance and compassion are greater treasures than material wealth.
The story centres on Robert and his sons, John and Lazarus, a low-income family facing sickness, insecurity and financial hardship. Even so, the family remains united through faith, hard work and perseverance. John pursues his studies with determination and eventually becomes a doctor, while their servant James demonstrates compassion despite his own difficulties.
The drama contrasts their journey with that of Cornelius, a wealthy yet proud and harsh man who looks down on the poor. His son Joshia, raised in privilege but without discipline or guidance, neglects his studies and falls into gambling, drinking, drugs and bad company.
Fortune takes a tragic turn when Joshia steals from his father. Mistaking the masked Joshia for a thief, Cornelius shoots him. John tries to save him, but Joshia dies, and Cornelius is left devastated and arrested.
The tragedy leads Cornelius to recognise the consequences of his pride and harshness. Realising that wealth could not save his son, he seeks John’s forgiveness and leaves his property to him.
Directed by Fr Augustine and team, who also composed the songs, the production featured Fr Tom Karthik as scriptwriter. It ultimately affirmed that poverty is never a reason for contempt and wealth should never become a source of pride or cruelty.
