Salesian College Students Unveil Heart Attack Prediction Breakthrough

News written by: Fr C M Paul SDB

At the sidelines of Rozgar Mela 2.0, a group of first-year students from Salesian College Siliguri drew significant attention with a live demonstration of their heart attack prediction software. This project has quickly become a symbol of youthful innovation and purpose-driven technology.

The student-built prototype, developed entirely from scratch by Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) students from the tribal community in collaboration with members of the Radio Club, analyzes health data to predict potential risks of cardiac arrest. Remarkably, the software represents the team’s major product achievement within their very first semester, highlighting both their technical promise and their commitment to addressing real-world health challenges.

The core development team was led by Anand Kumar, who founded the project and steered its vision. He was joined by backend expert Ronish Minj, designer Othniel Samuel, and logistics coordinator Rahul Kumar Sah — each contributing a distinct skill set that helped shape the project into a functional prototype that blended innovation with social awareness.

“I wanted this project to prove that technology can feel human,” Anand explained. Ronish echoed the team’s mission-driven approach: “It’s more than a model — it’s our small step toward saving lives.” Othniel highlighted the fusion of creativity and care, noting, “Healthcare innovation should start where compassion meets data.” Rahul added, “Every test run made the system stronger and us, more curious.”

To strengthen the prototype, a dedicated beta-testing team — Crist Minj, Priyam Kerketta, and Diya Kujur — worked systematically with the developers. Crist led research efforts by conducting extensive literature reviews and comparing machine learning models. Priyam focused on performance and dependability, saying, “For me, it was about trust — making sure what we built really works.” Diya emphasized user experience, adding, “We pushed the app like real users would, and it pushed us to improve.”

Their efforts drew praise from Rajya Sabha MP Shri Harsh Vardhan Shringla, who interacted with the team and witnessed the software in action. Deeply impressed by their technical capability and social vision, he encouraged the young innovators to patent their work and explore the possibility of developing it into a startup dedicated to serving humanity.

Faculty members of Salesian College also commended the students’ achievement, calling it a milestone in the institution’s ongoing mission to promote innovation, inclusivity, and community-centred technology. The Vice Principal (Sciences) noted that the project reflects the core spirit of Salesian education — empowering young Tribal students to harness technology with compassion and purpose.
