Salesians Embrace Digital Discipleship at INB Province Media Seminar
In a bold step toward digital evangelization, the Salesians of Don Bosco in the INB Province gathered for a transformative Media Seminar focused on equipping religious communicators to become “digital disciples.” Led by Fr Arockia Selvakumar SDB, the seminar emphasized the urgent need to move beyond passive media consumption and embrace content creation as a mission tool.
“In an era where technology and media shape the lives of young people,” Fr Selvakumar said, “the challenge before us is to take the press of Don Bosco’s time and bring it to the AI labs of today.” His keynote address set the tone for a day of hands-on exploration, where participants engaged with AI-driven tools like ChatGPT, SUNO, Perplexity, Runway ML, Heygen, and Magisterium AI. These sessions helped dispel fears and misconceptions surrounding artificial intelligence, showcasing its potential for evangelization, education, and pastoral care.
Fr Selvakumar highlighted the characteristics of Gen Z in India, describing them as “highly mobile-savvy and visual-first learners” with “short attention spans, but strong aspirations.” He noted that their learning is outcome-based and they actively seek guidance. “Today’s mission field is hybrid: both physical and digital,” he said. “Christ must be present not only in chapels but also through screens.”
The seminar framed media as the new oratory, calling Salesians to be “digital shepherds—listening, guiding, and evangelizing online.” Fr Selvakumar encouraged the creation of mission-driven content such as short videos, reels, music, and good night talks. He also emphasized the importance of mental health and empathetic accompaniment, urging communicators to nurture faith through podcasts, films, and reflections that are simple yet engaging.
In his explanation of AI, Fr Selvakumar introduced the concepts of ANI (Artificial Narrow Intelligence), AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), and ASI (Artificial Super Intelligence), likening AI to fire: “It can warm the house or burn it down.” He stressed ethical usage, advocating for transparency, privacy safeguards, and maintaining the human touch in digital interactions.
The seminar concluded with a stirring call to action. “We are called to be digital disciples. If we don’t tell our story, who will?” Fr Selvakumar urged. “Put out into the deep,” he said, invoking the spirit of Don Bosco to inspire confidence and creativity in the digital mission field.
