"I congratulate the Society of Don Bosco and Father George Quadros for his decade-long contribution to reviving paddy cultivation in Goa, especially of the fallow and Khazan lands, with his innovative skills and mechanized methods of planting and harvesting," said Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant inaugurating the Kharif season on the occasion of the World Environment Day at Raia, Goa on June 5.

Appreciating the efforts of Father Quadros, also known as the Paddy Man of Goa, Chief Minister Dr. Sawant said, "It is gratifying to know that Father Quadros, who began his work with just 10,000 square meters a decade back, has today covered distances from the north to the south of the state of Goa, an area of over 40 Lakh square meters". Confident of the dedication of Father Quadros, the Chief Minister projected a new goal of cultivating 400 hectares in the next 10 years, adding that Father Quadros may even complete the target before 10 years.

Speaking about the State's policy of providing subsidies to farmers, especially the youth of Goa, Dr. Sawant said the State will acquire 10 drones in the coming month and set up subsidies for education at the school level, launching the Agri Clinics scheme. He also appealed for a collective effort to restore the green cover of Goa from 66% to 76% in the coming years and asked everyone to plant a tree in honour of their mother.

The Provincial of Goa Province, Father Clive Telles, said, "Don Bosco left his secure ministry to walk the streets of Turin to work for the young, especially the poor and the abandoned. Today, Father George Quadros has done the same by working with and for the farming community of Goa, especially setting up teams of young professionals and youth, training them in modern methods and skills of mechanized farming and sending them out as service providers to revamp and revive the cultivation of paddy, helping farmers to return to their fields for cost-effective agriculture. He also thanked the State for extending its support to Father Quadros in achieving the milestone of successfully cultivating over 40 lakh square meters of fallow and khazan lands as paddy fields.

Father George, speaking on the occasion, thanked Dr Sawant for his immense contribution to the agriculture sector in the State of Goa. He thanked the Agricultural Minister, Shri Ravi Naik, for his wholehearted support and for being willing to make arrangements for the work carried out by the society. Acknowledging the Director of Agriculture, Sandeep Faldesai, for his support from the day he started his job, Father Quadros said he had been with him since 2015, helping and assisting him from the departmental side to introduce and reviving the fallow and khazan lands as fully functioning paddy fields.

Speaking about the achievement, Fr George said, "In the first year, we achieved only 40 hectares of land, and last year covered 300 hectares of land, and this year, we have given a commitment to the agriculture department of covering 400 hectares in 2025".
