Salesian Youth Synod nears conclusion with high hopes for transformative outcome

- Joseph PT

The Salesian Youth Synod (SYS 2024), an event marked by deep reflection and dynamic engagement, has entered its final stages with a clear focus on the future of the Salesian movement and its impact on young people worldwide. Hosted at Valdocco, the birthplace of Don Bosco, the Synod has brought together 376 participants, including 292 young people from 93 countries. The SYS 2024 is a significant event commemorating the bicentenary of Don Bosco's transformative dream at the age of nine. The synod began on August 11, 2024.

Modality of the Synod

The Synod’s structure has been a blend of spiritual enrichment, communal sharing, and rigorous discussions, all guided by the "Instrumentum Laboris," a key working document. This modality has allowed participants to delve into the Salesian mission’s core themes and reflect on how these can be adapted and strengthened in today’s world. Over the past week, the assembly has engaged in various sessions, including the "Tent of Meeting" and sacrament of reconciliation, small group discussions, and large assembly gatherings. These sessions have been designed to foster a deep connection between the participants and the spiritual legacy of Don Bosco, while also encouraging them to think creatively about the future.

One of the highlights so far has been the "Courtyard of Dreams" and the SYM fair-market, where participants could experience the rich diversity of the Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) and its initiatives worldwide. This was followed by a powerful adoration session titled "God supports and dwells in our dreams," emphasizing the divine presence in the hopes and aspirations of young people.

What’s Scheduled for the Final Days

As the Synod nears its conclusion, the schedule is packed with significant events and discussions aimed at solidifying the ideas that have emerged over the past days. On August 15th, the Assumption of Mary will be celebrated with a special Mass, followed by a forum led by the Rector Major Card. Ángel Fernández Artime titled "Dreams are always shaping the world." This session is expected to be a pivotal moment for the Synod, providing a space for the Rector Major to share his vision and for the participants to engage in critical dialogue.

The preparation of the final document will also take place on this day, where the redaction group will work on summarizing the key outcomes of the Synod. This document will outline the operative lines for the future of the Salesian mission, particularly focusing on the youth.

The closing of the synodal assembly on August 15th will include the presentation of the Final Decalogue of the Pastoral Teams (FMA-SDB), a key outcome that will guide Salesian work moving forward. The day will conclude with a celebration of the Word and a symbolic "Dreaming with eyes open" session, reflecting the Synod’s core theme.

Expectations and Hopes

The final day, August 16th, which coincides with Don Bosco’s birthday, will be a day of celebration and reflection. The morning will begin with an assembly focused on evaluating the Synod, followed by a grand celebration of the Holy Mass, presided over by the Rector Major. This Mass is expected to be a unifying moment, bringing together the reflections and dreams shared throughout the Synod.

The Salesian Youth Synod has been a significant event, not just for those in attendance but for the global Salesian community. The participants have high hopes that the outcomes of this Synod will lead to a rejuvenated and more vibrant Salesian mission, one that is more in tune with the dreams and challenges of today’s youth.
