News written by: Cl. Bernard Mardi
On 26th November 2021 the community of Salesian college Sonada conducted a webinar in memorial of late Fr. (Dr.) Varghese Kalluvachel, to commemorate his first death-anniversary.
Fr. James, the Rector of S.C.S community addressed the gathering and scrolled back to 1st November 2020; the day when Fr. Varghese presided over his last holy Eucharist in the community and delivered his homily on how ``Beatitude is lived in Salesian way.`` He also welcomed reverend Bishop Stephan Lepcha, the bishop of Darjeeling and all the guests joining this Memorial lecture offline as well as online.
Fr. Pritam the Vice-Rector of S.C.S welcomed and introduced the prominent professor and the speaker of the day Fr. Peter Kamaladoss, the Vice Rector of St. Peter`s seminary. He presented his paper on `Eco-Philosophy and Common Good`. He highlighted the sad story of our mother earth. How it is turning from bad to worse due to global warming and internal crisis of people. It is the anti-democratic attitude of human beings towards environment which puts it in terrible danger today. He also stressed on the saying of a Chinese poet Du Fu, ``the state is destroyed, but the mountains and rivers survive. But today opposite is true``.
He said that economic progress is immense but is very inhuman. The focus is shifted from human value to market value. He also presented various eco-friendly attitudes and concluded by saying that eco-logical movement should not remain just as mere theory but should be acted upon- in tangible and practical ways. This memorial lecture was followed by Holy Eucharist that was preceded by his Lordship Bishop Stephan Lepcha and he highlighted in his homily the need to be prepared for God`s final call. At the same time to be thankful for death as we are grateful for our life.
