News written by: Fr. Babu Varghese SDB
Delhi is in the spotlight as it struggles with the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite various challenges of Covid-19, Don Bosco Organisation for Social Concern and Operation of the Salesian Province of New Delhi (BOSCO Delhi) is out there to support the Delhiites with courage and fearlessness.
BOSCO Delhi has distributed dry ration to support 700 families and plans to reach out to 10,000 families in May. Cash assistance of rupees 3000 each has been given to 200 migrants and refugees in Delhi/NCR region to meet their basic expenses like rent. BOSCO Delhi hopes to support another 500 more such vulnerable families, especially families headed by women and the elderly without support. Other initiatives: through a dedicated team of medical social workers and doctors, 1041 individuals could access various hospital services; online consultation initiated for the COVID patients with the support of three doctors; 200 PPE kits provided to the frontline workers and NGO volunteers, and 2000 people provided with masks; sanitization materials distributed to 750 people.
BOSCO Delhi received from the South Korean embassy 450000 masks and are being distributed to people. Funeral assistance of rupees 7000 was given to 11 families who have lost their family member due to COVID. An online counselling programme with a team of psychologists and trained counsellors reached out to 303 individuals, which is one of the growing needs in Delhi. BOSCO Delhi provided Ration and utensils to 17 most vulnerable families among migrant construction workers.
Children numbering 1300 from various slums and migrant communities received online creative learning support. Twenty-nine digital learning programme sessions were conducted for 586 participants. Along with the local government authorities, BOSCO Delhi has provided cycle rickshaws to 5 families to sell vegetables and fruits in the villages as means of survival during the lockdown. So far, these families could manage their living. Hence, 15 families more will be supported to buy cycle rickshaws. BOSCO Delhi will procure oxygen concentrators and beds for five charity hospitals in Delhi with the support of various donors. These hospitals then will offer their free service to the needy.
