News written by: Panthackal Rubin SDB
With an unprecedented spike in corona cases in Bangalore, `Food to Your Doorstep` an initiative by Don Bosco BREADS (Bangalore Rural Educational and Development Society) and four other non-profit organizations (The Good Quest Foundation, Project Vision, AIFO and ECHO), reaches out to Covid-infected patients under quarantine by serving vegetarian food.
``Though the need is for oxygen and ventilators, we could not do that yet, so we decided to look at the socio-economic front,`` said Father Joy Nedumparambil SDB, Executive Director, BREADS. Knowing that many are infected and confined to their homes, the `Corona Care Bangalore` team, as they are known, decided to serve free nutritious food for 14 days. ``We serve only vegetarian food, and the menu includes wheat chapatis, vegetable stew, rice, sambar, a boiled egg, papad, pickle and fruits on alternate days. The meal is served once a day by our volunteers``, said Father Joy. The initiative was launched on April 26 and have reached out to 43 families and distributed 123 packets of food. The service is only for Covid-positive, needy patients and families with aged people.
On receiving the request from the people in need of help, the volunteers track the location. With all safety precautions, the food is picked up from the centralized kitchen and left at the doorstep in a contactless manner, and the volunteer calls to inform. The volunteers are a mix of students and working professionals. The team hopes to extend their service to frontline workers and families of nurses.
