Assam DB Migrant Desk: Data-Driven Discussions Propel Local Training for Village Catechists

News written by: Fr Albert Thyrniang SDB

Father Francis Bosco SDB, National Director of the Salesian Migrant Desk, addressed 49 head and village catechists at a three-day training for the Diphu diocese held at Mary Help of Christians Church, Satgaon, West Karbi Anglong, Assam. Organized by the Salesian parish on October 27, the event aimed to educate local church leaders on pressing migrant issues affecting the region. Father Albert Thyrniang, parish priest at Satgaon, presented his extensive survey of 1,596 migrant workers, shedding light on the socio-economic factors driving North East youth to seek employment in urban centers.

Bosco’s address was fueled by recent data collected by Albert Thyrniang, parish priest at Satgaon, who documented 1,596 migrant workers from the parish dispersed across various regions in India. This extensive survey highlighted the socio-economic drivers pushing North East youth to migrate to urban centers for employment. By sharing these findings with Bosco, Thyrniang underscored the urgent need to address both the immediate and long-term needs of these migrants.

In his presentation, Bosco illustrated the struggles of migrant workers, covering issues such as low wages, unhealthy working conditions, discrimination, and limited awareness of their legal rights. He emphasized the critical importance of securing essential documentation, including Aadhaar and health cards, to protect workers' welfare and rights. By offering practical insights into the legislative landscape affecting migrant laborers, Bosco equipped the catechists to become local advocates and resources for migrant families.

Thyrniang expressed heartfelt gratitude for Bosco’s expert input, emphasizing the value of data-driven discussions in shaping the catechists' understanding of migration issues. For the village catechists, many of whom have family members working outside Assam, the training was a meaningful opportunity to engage with the social and economic realities faced by migrants.

This gathering reflects the steadfast dedication of local catechists, whose ongoing support for the migrant community is invaluable to the Salesian Migrant Ministry's mission across South Asia. Their commitment ensures that the needs and rights of migrant workers remain central to the Church's outreach, affirming the collective mission to provide pastoral care, social support, and advocacy for vulnerable populations.
