The Youth Ministry Department of Salesian College Sonada (SCS), Darjeeling organized three Winter Youth Camps simultaneously at Dhajea Busty, Mollot (Balasun Valley) and Liza Hills (12 kms from Ghoom) from 6 - 8 February, 2008 for Christian boys and girls of Darjeeling Deanery.
The resource persons for Dhajea were Fr Martin Lakra sdb, Parish Priest of St Teresa`s Parish, Sonada and Fr Sunil Kerketta from Don Bosco, Mirik; Fr Babu Joseph sdb and Fr Alexander Topno for Mollot and for Liza Hills, Sr Maria Tamang, a Holy Cross nun and Sir Peter Rai rendered their services. All these resource persons were helped by nine Salesian clerics (II Course students) of SCS in the animation of the camps. The overall management and supervision was meticulously done by Fr Francis Gomes sdb, the Youth Animator of SCS. The camp was organized with a view to orient the youth and enhance their abilities to live a full human, social and spiritual life. About 45 to 50 youth each attended Liza Hill and Mollot camps whereas Dhajea graced 80 to 85 participants. Few keen parents also came to witness the camp and to pick up what they missed in their early life. The activities of the camps included group dynamics like party-action songs, skits, games, input sessions, educative films, group discussion, quiz, camp fire, work, etc. Daily Mass, Rosary devotion and other prayers also formed an integral part of the camps. The camp began on Ash Wednesday and it was interesting to note that one meal was forgone on that day. It kept alive the Lenten spirit even as the camp promised a time of fun and joy along with God. Two films were shown at Mollot, namely `Johny Bosco` and `Wages of Tears.` The first made them realize how one can be close to God even without forsaking enjoyable playtime and entertainment. The second, a documentary film `Wages of Tears` based on the street children of Mumbai and their plight brought unforced tears as they watched it. Questions on Don Bosco and The Bible during the Quiz exhibited great enthusiasm and nail-biting competitive spirit in the quest to out smart the other groups and top the score board. The youth participated with lot of enthusiasm and eagerness and desired that camps like these be held at least twice a year. The camp brought about a feeling of oneness, togetherness, unity, love, friendship and joy for the youth. ``Run, Jump and Play, but do not offend God`` often quoted by Don Bosco for his Oratory boys from the saying of St Philip Neri, at the end became the catch word for the youth as they left for their homes.
