Music’s ability to calm the mind, sharpen focus and spark emotional expression has long been recognized by scientists and educators. For children with special needs, these benefits are even more profound. Music becomes a language—one that helps them communicate, develop social and motor skills, and connect confidently with the world around them.

This transformative power was at the heart of a special Music Therapy Session titled “Musical Expression”, organized on November 22 by Don Bosco International School (DBIS), Matunga, in collaboration with Wading Through Life Funtoosh (WTL), Nerul. Held in the school hall, the event brought together children with special needs and their families for an afternoon of rhythm, movement and laughter.

The session opened with Ms Wenonah Castellino, Founder Director of WTL–Funtoosh, who welcomed the participants and emphasized how music therapy supports emotional well-being and long-term growth in children. Her address set an encouraging tone, inviting families to immerse themselves in the experience.

Activities began with a gentle “Thank You” song, easing children into the session and encouraging a sense of gratitude. Soon after, an energetic dance led by DBIS music teacher Ms Leann Dsouza filled the hall, bringing parents and children to their feet. Smiles, applause and playful movement quickly dissolved inhibitions.

The interactive segment “Musical Rhythm”, led by Ms Castellino, introduced percussion instruments, including tambourines, claves, and drums. Participants walked together in a joyful circle, guided by Don Bosco Youth Services (DBYS) volunteers, who boosted enthusiasm. A lively marching-band style song followed, keeping spirits high. School counsellor Ms Bindu then offered practical coping strategies for addressing behavioural concerns in children.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Fr. Ajoy Fernandes, Director of DBIS, who stressed the importance of community support. The organizers expressed gratitude to the DBYS youth team for their active involvement.

The event left families with a shared sense of hope—celebrating music as a joyful bridge to growth, connection and inclusion.
