Expansion of Don Bosco Mission in Shillong Province
On January 26, over 2,000 people gathered to celebrate the Salesian Province of Shillong's expanded presence in the Barak Valley region. The Mary Help of Christians Quasi-parish and the Don Bosco Centre in Patharkandi, Sribhumi (Karimganj) District, Assam, were inaugurated as the first parish and second Salesian presence in the Barak Valley region, respectively.
The celebration commenced with a solemn Mass by Most Rev. Bishop Stephen Rotluanga CSC, Bishop of Aizawl Diocese. Most Rev. Bishop Joachim Walder, Auxiliary Bishop of Aizawl Diocese, Father John Zosiama SDB, Provincial of the Salesian Province of Shillong, Father Genesius Wanñiang SDB, Economer of the Salesian Province of Shillong, and other priests from the Barak Valley region parishes concelebrated with Bishop Stephen.
During the Mass, Bishop Stephen Rotluanga CSC read the Decree declaring the establishment of the new Quasi-Parish of Mary Help of Christians. Father Albastar Kharkongor SDB was appointed and installed as the first parish priest.
A cultural programme followed the Holy Eucharist, featuring diverse performances, songs, music, and cultural dances by children and youth from the new parish and students from Boscotech, Silchar, and Don Bosco School Silchar.
