“My catechism classes are boring. I’m not trained for this. The kids aren’t even paying attention.” This frank admission echoed the experiences of many catechists who gathered for a two-day diocesan workshop hosted at the Don Bosco Catechetical Centre in Pune on June 28 and 29.

The workshop, spearheaded by Fr. Dinesh SDB, Director of the Centre, aimed to revitalize catechetical ministry by equipping 70 catechists from across the Diocese of Pune with practical, creative tools for more engaging classroom instruction.

Animating the sessions was Fr. Gilbert Choondal SDB (INK), a renowned catechetical expert whose dynamic and interactive approach captivated the participants.

“He was brilliant in this field. He left us all motivated with his energy and passion!” said participant Sachin Lobo. Viola D’Souza appreciated the structure Fr. Gilbert brought to the sessions: “He taught us how to plan and time our lessons—and modelled it perfectly. Every session was well-prepared, executed, and wrapped up right on time.”

Youth catechist Beena found the sessions specially tailored to her needs. “Being young, I found his sessions vibrant and very relevant. I learned so many tools for catechesis—it was exactly what I needed.” “There was never a dull moment. I didn’t even realize how the time passed,” shared Veena Pereira, echoing the enthusiastic response of most participants.

Aveera summed up the impact of the workshop: “These two days were enriching, powerful, and gave me a whole new perspective on the role of a catechist.”

All participants received certificates of participation. Fr. Dinesh and his team were commended for the smooth coordination, from venue readiness to training materials, ensuring an ideal atmosphere for creative learning and pastoral renewal.
