Domestic Staff of Tiruchy Province Go Air Pilgrimage to Goa
In a gesture of appreciation and celebration, the Salesian Province of Tiruchy sponsored its domestic staff on an air pilgrimage to Goa as part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations.
As the Salesian Province of Tiruchy, bifurcated from the Chennai Salesian Province in 1999, is commemorating its silver jubilee this year, the Province has undertaken numerous initiatives, such as planting 100,000 tree saplings and ensuring that 75% of its 31 presences are powered by solar energy and several others. Among these initiatives is the sponsored pilgrimage to Goa.
The 61 domestic staff members travelled to Chennai by train and then flew to Goa. They spent two full days in Goa, visiting key places such as the Bom Jesus Basilica, where they witnessed the decennial exposition of the incorruptible body of St. Francis Xavier. The itinerary also included visits to some beaches in both North and South Goa and an introduction to Goan cultural dances on a cruise.
Goa and St. Francis Xavier are associated with the Province of Annai Velankanni Trichy. Annai Velankanni, the patroness of the Province, first appeared to Portuguese sailors in Goa in the 17th century, leading to the church's foundation there. Every year, numerous pilgrims from Goa flock to Velankanni in remembrance. Additionally, Christianity in the coastal region of Tiruchy owes its origin to St. Francis Xavier, who evangelized the region. Therefore, the pilgrimage to Goa and the darshan of St. Francis Xavier's relic will remain etched in the hearts of the domestic staff for a lifetime. Father Amaladoss, the Economer of the Province, meticulously arranged the trip.
The Province employs nearly 95 domestic staff across its 31 presences, most of whom are Christians. The Province has sponsored 75% of the expenses for this trip, with the local community and individual staff members contributing partially.
