“Our call is not for survival but a call of the spirit to be alive and to take up the challenges of the world today,” said the Provincial of the Bangalore Province, Fr. Dr. Jose Koyickal, quoting Pope Francis at the inaugural function of the 16th Provincial Chapter held at Kristu Jyothi College Bangalore on April 21. He referred to the Provincial Chapter as a sacred cenacle, a space where the confreres come together and look to the future. The Chapter is attended by one hundred Salesians of Bangalore Province and moderated by Fr. Joe Tony Previnth SDB.

The 16th Provincial Chapter of the Salesians of the Bangalore Province, scheduled from April 20-25 with the theme, ‘Passionate about Jesus Christ: Dedicated to the Young People,” began with a day of recollection on April 20, animated by Fr. Banzelao Teixeira SDB, the Vice Provincial of Panjim Province. He focused the reflections on ‘Rekindling our passion for Christ.’

The official proceedings of the 16th Provincial Chapter began with the Holy Eucharist officiated by Fr. Dr. Jose Koyickal. Celebrating the Sunday of the Good Shepherd, Fr. Koyickal pointed out that Jesus the Good Shepherd is not just an image for us, but someone whom we should imitate and become good shepherds ourselves. It’s not enough to show the way but to become the way for the young, he said.

During the inaugural function, the various heads and representatives of the Salesian Family extended their felicitations and exhorted the Salesians to march towards greater fidelity to the calling and prophetic understanding of the mission.

The occasion paid tribute to confreres who have gone to their eternal reward. The inaugural ceremony also marked the release of two books – Theological Formation of Salesians in India with Special Reference to Kristu Jyoti College Bangalore (1967-1976) by Thomas Anchukandam and Glow in the Horizon (Second Edition) edited by Fr. Prasad SDB.
