- Fr C.M. Paul SDB

A seasoned Salesian and Professor of Sacred Scripture, Fr. Jose Varickasseril, has paid tribute to his Novice Master, Fr. Nicholas Lo Groi, by dedicating a comprehensive 72-page book commemorating the sesquicentenary of the Salesian Constitutions. Fr. Lo Groi, who guided three batches of novices with affection and dedication, served as a beacon of inspiration for the novices under his care.

In his book titled "The Sesquicentenary of the Salesian Constitutions, 1874-2024," Fr. Varickasseril meticulously documents the evolution and significance of the Salesian Constitutions over the past 150 years. Drawing from his extensive experience and research, the book features 113 footnotes, predominantly derived from Italian sources, offering profound insights into the history and essence of the Salesian Order.

Reflecting on the monumental task undertaken by St. John Bosco, whose efforts led to the approval of the Salesian Constitutions by Pope Pius IX on 3rd April 1874, Fr. Varickasseril emphasizes the profound significance of these rules in guiding countless members of the Salesian family towards sanctity. He highlights the canonization of St. John Bosco and the recognition of numerous Salesians by the Church as a testament to the enduring relevance and efficacy of the Salesian Constitutions.

Fr. Lo Groi, affectionately known for his nurturing guidance and unwavering commitment to the novices entrusted to his care, played a pivotal role in shaping the lives of over 150 novices during his tenure. His dedication to instilling a love for Don Bosco and the Salesian Constitutions among his novices has left an indelible mark on the Salesian community.

As the Salesian Order commemorates 150 years of its Constitution, Fr. Varickasseril's tribute serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of those who have dedicated their lives to nurturing the spiritual growth and development of future generations within the Salesian family. Through his book, Fr. Varickasseril not only honours the memory of his beloved Novice Master but also reaffirms the timeless relevance of the Salesian Constitutions in guiding individuals along the path of sanctity and service.
