THE NATIONAL SEMINAR ON YaR CHILD POLICY

The Annual National YaR Seminar will be held on 9th and 10th of March 2011 at Citadel (Salesian Provincial House) in Chennai. The following themes would be addressed at this seminar to finalize the draft of the YaR Child Policy: Vision, Guiding Principles, Strategic Objectives, Survival, Development, Protection, Participation, Organizational Protocols, Recruitment and training of Staff, Research, Documentation, Responses to allegation to Child Abuse, Evaluation and Review of the policy etc.
The Participants of the seminar include Salesians from 70 plus YaR Centres in India, Daughters of Mary Help of Christians and collaborators in the YaR missions. The seminar will be inaugurated by Rt. Rev. Dr. AM Chinnappa SDB, DD, Arch Bishop of Madras- Mylapore at 9:30 AM on 9th March 2011.
Fr. Mathew Thomas, the Executive Director of the YaR Forum, stated that this seminar brings together pioneers, field workers, strategists, representatives of Govt: Statutory Bodies and policy makers on the common platform to articulate and to draft a child policy to fine tune Salesian intervention on behalf of the Young at Risk to ensure appropriate standards of care and protection in all the YaR Centres and settings across the subcontinent. A total of 80 participants across India are expected to be part this national exercise in child policy development.
The Don Bosco National Forum for the Young at Risk ( YaR ) is a Salesian initiative that reach out to 90 cities and towns through Shelter Homes, Children`s Homes, Youth Hostels ,Street Presences, Childline Services, Homelink Child Tracking Systems, Child Labour Schools, Vocational Training, Education Programmes, Child Rights Centres, Documentation, Research, Advocacy Programmes etc. The categories of young the YaR forum partners serve are Street Children, Child Labourers, School Dropouts, abandoned orphans, Young prisoners or children in conflict with Law, Young substance abusers, Children in war torn areas, refugee children, children in commercial sex trade, children affected by HIV/AIDS etc.
Together with the YaR Forum India, the YaR Commission of Chennai Province is behind the organization of the national YaR seminar in Chennai. It is also a Silver Jubilee event of Don Bosco Anbu Illam Chennai that has done yeomen services for the rehabilitation of thousands of young persons from the streets of Chennai city during the last of 25 years. `Hearty congratulations, Anbu Illam Chennai!`
