Cyber Club Leads Digital Literacy Drive in Remote Umkhon Village
The Cyber Club of the Department of Computer Science, St. Anthony’s College, Shillong, successfully concluded its annual computer literacy outreach programme, Bridging the Digital Divide, held from December 5 to 9 at Fatima UP School, Umkhon, Ri-Bhoi district—nearly 75 kilometres from the city.
Now in its third edition at Umkhon, the initiative continues to build digital confidence among rural students who have limited access to technology. This year, over 45 students from Classes 6, 7, and 8 participated in the hands-on sessions, learning fundamental computer operations and digital awareness skills essential for their academic and future careers.
A dedicated team of 12 final-year BSc Computer Science students—comprising nine boys and three girls—led the instructional activities. Their training modules focused on basic computer use, an introduction to typing, file management, and responsible digital use. In addition to IT training, the volunteers extended classroom support by offering free coaching in Mathematics and Science for all participating classes.
The outreach also embraced a social responsibility dimension. The Cyber Club members distributed usable clothing collected from donors, creating a warm, caring atmosphere for the village families and schoolchildren.
