GC29: Capitulars visit St Caravario’s birthplace; Celebrate Mass with Salesian Cardinal

News written by: Previnth Joe Tony SDB

For some members of GC 29, the visit to Courgné, Italy—the birthplace of St. Callisto Caravario, the Salesian protomartyr—on Sunday, March 2, was a profoundly moving experience. It was a journey that brought to mind and heart the memory of a man who gave everything to the Lord.

The chapter members were warmly welcomed by His Eminence Ángel Fernández Cardinal Artime, SDB, along with the past pupils of Don Bosco in Courgné. The visit began at the church and premises built by the Salesians, which was handed over to the Commune of Courgné. The pilgrims then visited the parish church and celebrated at the solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by His Eminence. The Mayor of Courgné was also present and accorded a warm welcome to the Salesians.

In his homily, the Salesian Cardinal expressed his gratitude to the past pupils for keeping the charism of Don Bosco alive and offered prayers for the people of Courgné. After the Mass, the guide escorted the pilgrims to the baptistry where St. Caravario was baptized. Then they visited the house where Caravario was born, which the Salesians had converted into a small chapel.

The Mayor later accompanied the chapter members to the city theatre, where she recalled the immense contribution of the Salesians to the local community. She also shared how much the commune misses their presence and expressed her hope that the congregation might consider resuming an apostolate there. Meanwhile, the commune has decided to transform the former Salesian structures into a library, providing young people with a meaningful learning and personal growth space.

Following these visits, the past pupils hosted a festive lunch at a local restaurant for the capitulars. As the visit concluded, one could not help but feel grateful for the opportunity to witness the enduring legacy of a saint whose memory continues to inspire the people of Courgné to lead virtuous lives.
