Child-Friendly Cities Initiative Implemented in Dimapur and Shillong

News written by: Fr. Joe Prabu SDB

The United Nations founded the Child-Friendly Cities Initiatives (CFCI) in 1996 to respond to the challenges of realizing children's rights in an increasingly urbanized and decentralized world. The Salesians of Don Bosco adopted this initiative with the project name Strengthening Social Participation and Promotion of Children's Rights. The project is carried out in collaboration with Don Bosco Project Development Offices in the Salesian Provinces of Dimapur (AIDA) and Shillong (BIDS), while the Don Bosco National Forum for the Young at Risk (YaR) provided technical support.

Child-Friendly Cities Initiatives' implementing partners ANMA Integrated Development Association (AIDA), Bosco Integrated Development Society (BIDS), and DB YaR Forum organized a staff capacity-building training program from November 25 to 28. The program's objective was to strengthen and anchor the necessary competencies of the project team members toward the effective implementation of the Child-Friendly Cities Initiative in Dimapur and Shillong. An in-depth reflection and discussion on the data analysis, findings, and recommendations of the implementation of CFCI by the External Evaluators (New Delhi) was held in the BIDS office in Shillong.

Throughout capacity-building training, the participants engaged in an intense session on the importance of digital documentation, which included an inclusive session on Homelink DIGI by Father Joe Prabu. Apart from visiting various organizations and attending sessions, the project teams, according to the cities, had group discussions and presentations. These sessions focused on success stories, child-led surveys, best practices of the organizations, the theory of change, the impact of the initiatives, and the way forward after the completion of the project period in the cities.

The capacity-building program allowed the staff to reflect, share ideas, and adopt new strategies for making tomorrow child-friendly. "This program assisted us in bringing in a day where we fulfill Don Bosco's dream by turning every good child into an honest citizen with the help of the child-friendly concept," said Pratik Dhainje.
