SIGA Kick-starts Innovation Activities

News written by: PT Joseph SDB

The Salesian Institute of Graphic Arts (SIGA), a private Don Bosco Higher Education Institution (HEI) of the Province of Chennai, has initiated activities required by the Institution Innovative Cell (IIC) of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Ministry of Education (MoE) for the first quarter. Registered in 2020, SIGA participates in IIC 5.0 to foster a culture of Innovation amongst the staff and students. As an outcome, the final-year student of the Diploma in Printing Technology are working on innovative ideas, including new-age printing inks from seeds. And the past pupils are exploring how to transform campus with ideas, prototypes, and start-ups under YUKTI National Innovation Challenges https://yukti.mic.gov.in

Inspired by the IIC 5.0 calendar events, “SIGA is committed to contributing to the national growth index”, assured the Principal Father PT Joseph, addressing the students’ assembly. Accordingly, SIGA IIC has begun to nurture young students to work with new ideas and transform them into prototypes while they are still in their formative years. The first workshop on Problem Solving and Ideation was discussed by Antony, Founder of FMBC Chennai, on November 19, 2022, and V. John Fredrick, Senior Project Coordinator – Packaging Design, SGK Chennai, dealt with the topic “Entrepreneurship and Innovation as Career Opportunity” on November 22. Both these workshops were offline, on the college premises.

MoE’s Innovation Cell (MIC) is committed to encouraging the creation of the ‘Institution’s Innovation Council (IICs)’ across selected HEIs. The focus is to create a vibrant local innovation ecosystem, to support the start-ups in HEIs, to prepare the institute for the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA), to establish a functional ecosystem for scouting and pre-incubation of ideas, and to develop a better cognitive ability for technology students. For the performance card, institutions log into their IIC account at https://iic.mic.gov.in

There are events that aim to develop a better cognitive ability for technology students and to prepare the college for the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements Framework in India. ARIIA uses the following indicators to prepare for the rank of institutions:

  • Budget & Funding Support.
  • Infrastructure & Facilities.
  • Awareness, Promotions & support for Idea Generation & Innovation.
  • Promotion & Support for Entrepreneurship Development.
  • Innovative Learning Methods & Courses.
  • Intellectual Property Generation, Technology Transfer & Commercialization.
  • Innovation in Governance of the Institution.
