Youth Pastoral Day at SIGA

News written by: PORUTHUR Joseph
SIGA Polytechnic College, a leading institute of Printing Technology in South India, celebrated their Youth Pastoral Day on Wednesday, 26 July 2017. The glittering function was inaugurated by Rev. Dr. John Bosco Lourdusamy SDB, Vice Provincial of the Salesian Province of Chennai, in the presence of Fr. John Christy SDB, Rector, Father P. T. Joseph SDB, Principal, Father Parthibanraj SDB, Director of Deepagam, and Father Mani Lazar SDB, the Province Youth Director.
The term ``Youth Pastoral``stands for an ensemble of services and activities designed to promote the all-round well-being and development of young people in all Don Bosco educational settings across the world. Literally the expression, derived from Latin, means ``shepherding the lambs`` or looking after the young ones. While young people are responsible for their own growth and development, the educators`task is to create the right atmosphere for the young to bloom.Generally this is done by encouraging young people to form groups or clubs within which they feel comfortable to work and give their best to the common task and feel appreciated for their contribution. The group settings give young people the possibility of taking up leadership roles and building up their self-confidence in a spirit of freedom, commitment and teamwork. In this respect, SIGA gives its students wide possibilities in developing their gifts and talents by joining any of the 24 clubs that are currently available to students. These clubs or youth groups are student-centered and interest-based. The members are encouraged to sit together, plan their projects and execute them through teamwork. The Youth Pastoral Day was celebrated as an event to create greater awareness in the staff and students of the college about the global Salesian Youth Movement and its functioning across the world. The 24 clubs are grouped under the 4+2 Dimensions of Salesian Youth Ministry and animated by the Province delegates of various commissions, coordinated by province SYM delegate. College Staff Coordinators and club leaders formulate the Educative Pastoral Plan (EPP) of the Institute along with the Vice Principal, one of whose tasks is to mentor the club members. The EPP is approved by the House Council. The monitoring and reporting of events go bottom-up: club leaders to the Assistant College Public Leader, who in turn reports to the Principal. The Principal communicates important initiatives to the Rector and the Vice Provincial. The news coverage is managed by BIS Team at local and province level. Clubs post their events in their social channels. the Principal hand picks online data for College FB and advocacy. In his address to the students, Father Bosco complimented the students for their active participation in the clubs and expressed the hope that every Technical Institute in the Province replicates this initiative and promote Youth Pastoral Days in all our campuses. Fr. Mani encouraged the students to look at their club activities as part of the global Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) and not to see them merely as local club events. These clubs create new friends and support systems for individuals not only within the college but across the nation and worldwide with a specific Don Bosco identity.
