70th Batch of B.Ph Students Welcomed

The Bishop of Darjeeling, Rt Rev Stephen Lepcha inaugurated the 70th B.Ph (three year degree) Course at Salesian College on 9th June at 10.00 am in the college auditorium.
The Keynote address for the occasion (an annual feature) was delivered by Fr Dr Mathew George sdb, newly appointed to the College Community, on the theme: ``Empowerment through education as the key to Tribal Development.`` Addressing the vast majority of Tribal students in the hall, he showed through an in depth analysis the impact of education on different communities across the world and emphasised the role higher education plays in their lives and the life of their communities.
Bishop Stephen Lepcha, the second bishop of the diocese established in 1964, in his inaugural address congratulated and appreciated the Salesian Congregation for the bold decision to open up the seminary-college for the benefit of the local deserving student population as well.
The day was also scheduled to launch the remedial coaching centre - a UGC sponsored venture - for the tribal and minority students of the college. The chief guest, Ms Atiya Mushtaque, Member, National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions, Govt of India, though in Darjeeling could not make it to the college for the morning due to ill health.
The batch of thirty students from three salesian provinces of Delhi, Guwahati and Kolkata and four dioceses arrived on 26th May and had proceeded directly for ten days Nepali Language Course at the College property in the village of Dhajia to insert themselves into their chosen land of study for the coming three years.
The new students and staff members, especially Fr TL Jose, the new Dean of Studies, Fr Shiju James, Computer Skills teacher, Fr Dr. Mathew George and Br. Paul Passo were welcomed by Fr Dr Tomy Augustine sdb, Rector, Salesian College, and the course significance was introduced by the Principal Fr George Thadathil sdb.
