Fr Stefano Martoglio takes over ad interim; Cardinal Angel Fernandez Artime resigns as the Rector Major
The Vicar of the Salesian Congregation, Fr Stefano Martoglio, took charge ad interim until the election of the Rector Major, which will take place during the 29th General Chapter in Turin from February 16 to April 12, 2025. This was communicated by the Cardinal Angel Fernandez Artime, who resigned from the office of the Rector Major of the Society of St Francis de Sales upon being ordained as a Cardinal.
Angel Fernandez Cardinal Artime submitted his resignation from the office of the Rector Major of the Society on the birthday of Don Bosco, August 16, 2024. In a communication to the Salesians he said, “I express my deep gratitude to all my Salesian confreres around the world. I have always felt welcomed, loved and fraternally accepted, and I have found collaboration and generosity”.
In his farewell speech, Cardinal Artime expressed deep gratitude for his ten and a half years of service, highlighting the blessings received during this period and the unwavering support from his fellow Salesians. He specifically thanked the two General Councils that supported him, his Salesian confreres worldwide, and his biological family for their unconditional love and encouragement.
Cardinal Artime also expressed his confidence in his successor, Fr. Stefano Martoglio, praising his dedication and leadership qualities. Reflecting on his tenure, he emphasized the joy he experienced in meeting young people globally, witnessing the "educational miracles" within the Salesian mission.
In his final remarks, Cardinal Artime entrusted the future of the Salesian Congregation to Don Bosco and the Help of Christians, affirming his enduring commitment to the Salesian mission. He concluded with heartfelt thanks, stating that he will always remain a Salesian at heart.
