Learning the language of people to reach their hearts
Following the footprints of the Salesian missionaries who learned the languages and cultures of North East India to bring the Good News and development to the people, the Province of Guwahati organised three weeks of learning two languages for the young Salesians and pre-novices.
To continue the legacy of the early missionaries and enhance the missionary spirit, the young Salesians and pre-novices of Guwahati were given a professional course on two major languages, Karbi and Bodo, widely used in the Province, from July 3-24. Father Joseph Teron, Vice Provincial, himself a Karbi, organised the Karbi course. Cleric Silbison Borgoyari handled the Bodo course for the pre-novices. The pre-novices also had training in computer skills and learning languages using the language lab. The learners of the Bodo language had opportunities to interact with the rural people as their pre-novitiate was attached to a parish in the rural setting. Meanwhile, those who learned the Karbi language could interact with the students and youth who are studying in the city of Guwahati. They also had field trips visiting the people in their villages.
