A Two day Research Scholars’ Workshop was held at Salesian College Sonada and Organized by the Xavier Board of Higher education (Darjeeling unit) from 21-22 April 2006. There were in all 18 participants including four from the host college. The event was planned by the Darjeeling unit of the All India Association of Catholic Colleges (Xavier Board) as a staff enrichment programme. In two days the scholars each in turn presented the respective research projects they are engaged with at various levels of completion and the other scholars commented upon the presentations.
The programme was coordinated by Fr Babu Joseph, Department of History at Salesian college. The inaugural address, setting the tone for the proceedings was done by Prof. Milindo Chakroborty, St Joseph’s College, Darjeeling and Director, CREATE. He emphasized the responsibility of the /research scholar to impact policy makers creating a feedback loop of supplying the information on the impact of policies on society back for redressal or remodification. The first session was set aside for reviewing the national level UGC seminars held in three colleges: Darjeeling Government college, St Joseph’s College, Darjeeling and Salesian College Sonada. These reports were presented by Mr Aniruddha DAs, Ms. Rosy Chamling and Mr Terence Mukhia respectively, highlighting the main learning from the conduct of the seminar. Two concrete suggestions came out as a result: one, the need for a seminar on research methodologies and paper presentations as to enhance the quality of the seminars; and the other, the need to disseminate the findings of the seminars among the wider public and to the policy makers. The scholars made their respective researches on varying topics : ‘preschool children’s mathematical language skills’ (Mary Anne Chacko, B.Ed College, Siliguri), Disney and Children’s Literature ( Saunak Samajdar, Bagdogra College), Forest and Environment History of Darjeeling (Fr K.J. Jose, St Joseph’s College), The Environmental Movements of Tehri and Narmada (Padam Nepal, St Joseph’s College), The Translation of Partition: a study of partition literature in Bengal (Mosarrap Khan, Kurseong College), The Impact of Education on Lepcha Community (Ms Soma Chakraborty, Loreto College), The Research Hurdles in Social Science (Ranjeeta Saunak, Department of Political Science, NBU), Louis Mathias in Assam: 1922-1934 – A study of Salesian Missionary Spirituality (Fr Joseph Pauria, Salesian College, Sonada), The Personality of Franz Kafka in his writings (Miss Rosy Chamling, Government College, Darjeeling) The workshop concluded with a presentation by Fr George Thadathil, Principal Salesian College and President of the Catholic Colleges Association (Xavier Board) Eastern Zone, on “The Role of Self in Teaching/Research : A Rural Perspective” highlighting the need to attend to the transitions occurring in the inner world of the Researcher even while engaging with the external world. He provided a methodology for attending to the inner self basing on the Catuspad of the Upanisads reworked along modern transpersonal psychology and insights of contemporary philosophies. The participants felt amply rewarded for the time spend together clarifying for oneself and enabling fellow researchers to move on with their respective projects and expressed the desire to meet again in another three to four months. At the evaluation the participants were unanimous about the utility of such ventures in deepening the scholarly mission of the teaching community in the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
