Province Secretaries Gather for Annual Meet at Mumbai Provincial House

19 September 2024
- Fr. Vinod Mascarenhas SDB, INB Province Secretary

The province secretaries of the South Asia Region convened for their annual meeting on September 17-18 at Don Bosco Provincial House, Matunga, Mumbai. The event was marked by the presence of Fr. Biju Michael, South Asia Regional Councillor, and Fr. John Parankimalil, Secretary of the Salesian Provincial Conference of South Asia (SPCSA).

The gathering opened with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Fr. Savio Silveira, Provincial of Bombay, who highlighted the importance of empathy and family spirit, echoing Don Bosco's commitment to the young and the poor. Following this, Fr. Silveira addressed the secretaries, commending them for their pivotal role in the provinces' mission and outlining a provincial secretary's core responsibilities, summarized as anticipation, briefing, communication, and documentation.

Fr Godfrey D’Souza, the Rector of Don Bosco, Matunga, spoke to the secretaries about their pivotal role, which involves a blend of administrative efficiency and a deep commitment to the Salesian mission. He emphasized the importance of their role, urging them to be caring secretaries through empathy and understanding, effective communication, support and collaboration, and building personal connections. Fr Parankimalil presented the role and tasks of the SPCSA Secretary and requested the secretaries' assistance in maintaining documentation concerning Salesian South Asia. Fr Jacob Iruppakkaattu (Secretary, Calcutta) and Fr Vinod Mascarenhas (Secretary, Bombay) shared their ways of functioning as secretaries.

Fr Joaquim D’Souza, the former Provincial and Regional Councillor, shared salient points about the functioning of the SPCSA and his six points of “a dream that makes the SPCSA dream.”

Fr Biju Michael rounded off the first day with a presentation of a key project of the Salesians in the South Asia Region: “With the Youth to Eradicate Poverty: Reduction of Multidimensional Poverty.” He emphasized that this is not just a project but a purposeful journey that touches the identity as Salesians; it aligns with the SDGs and the declared directive of GC28 to make an “absolute priority for the young, the poorest and most abandoned and defenseless.” It sees the Salesians and collaborators working with young people as protagonists to remove poverty from the families of 300,000 young people in the next six years.

Fr Biju Michael presided at the Eucharist on the second day. In his homily, he reminded the secretaries that they are “custodians of the truth” in the province and they ought to fulfill their responsibility despite criticism because love “rejoices with the truth… (and) endures all things.”

In the morning sessions, the Regional Councillor and the secretaries interacted on several issues: the role of the secretary, the challenges of data collection and management, understanding the functioning of different bodies in the region and the provinces, the challenges in social communication, programs and courses, and procedures for requests to the Rector Major. Fr Michael concluded the interaction by reminding the secretaries of their crucial role as notaries.

The two-day event included visiting the Archdiocesan Heritage Museum, providing cultural and spiritual enrichment to the participants. Fr. Biju Michael praised the meeting as an enriching experience, fostering both learning and camaraderie among the secretaries and leadership.
