Dance Exhibition to Promote Local Culture

A Cultural Dance Exhibition was held in the auditorium of Salesian College Sonada (SCS), Darjeeling on Sunday 7 September, 2008. This is an annual feature and was organized by the Youth Department Ministry of the College led by the Youth Animator Rev.Fr Francis Gomes sdb.
About 700 youngsters packed the auditorium beyond capacity from 24 Youth Centres out of 29 Youth Centres managed and run by the Brothers (Students of Philosophy and BA) of the College. Owing to the limited seating capacity of the hall and to facilitate the viewing of the programme a television set was stationed outside the Hall in the corridor to relay the live coverage of the programme. The Nepali dances were performed to the tune of the composed song by the respective youth centre members and not from any album or tape. The rich variety of Nepali dance steps, rhythm and colourful costumes not only made the day festive but also blew away the wrong notion that today`s youth are only after the latest fashion or blind aping of the west. Rev Fr Tomy Augustine sdb, Rector of SCS along with the Chief Guest handed over the trophies and prizes. Chaitapani Youth Centre near Kurseong was adjudged the winner followed by Ramitey-Sonada Youth Centre. Unlike other years, this time along with the trophies, a total of 10 cash prizes instead of in kind, were given so that the centres can utilize the sum according to the need or requirement of the Youth Centre. The Chief Guest Mr Prahlad Chettri, Principal Blue Bird School, Sonada hailed the efforts of the Brothers and the Youths and lauded Salesian College for the initiative taken to preserve and promote the Nepali culture and tradition in his message. The panel of judges included Mr Dookumar Pradhan, Principal and Miss Priti Gurung, Dance Teacher of Soor Tarang Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Sonada and Mr Purna Kumar Babari, Teacher at Nritya Chandan, Darjeeling. The programme started at 10.00 am and continued till lunch break at 1.00 pm. In the afternoon a Nepali skit was performed by the Students of SCS. The programme ended at 3.30 pm with the announcement of the results and prize distribution to the winners.
