TEACHERS` DAY WITH PREMCHAND`S PLAYS

News written by: Albert Kujur
Sonada, Wed 5 Sept.: The theatre troupe, Prerna Kala Manch(PKM), Varanasi performed two plays for the staff and students of Salesian College Sonada, Darjeeling on the occasion of Teachers` Day on 5 September, 2007 for two hours from 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm. PKM under the aegis of Vishwa Jyoti Communications managed by Indian Missiological Society (IMS) Fathers was set up in 1993 and has actors from all walks of life and religion.
The main objective of PKM is to build a human community based on the values of love, peace, justice and collaboration beyond the walls of caste, religion sect or gender. They have come in Darjeeling District for a week under the leadership of Fr Anand IMS and have been giving performances in various educational institutions. Their plays are mostly based on social themes such as people`s government, education, globalization, fundamentalism, youth problems, etc. They have about 40 plays in their list and have so far given 3500 shows. More than 11 lakhs rural and urban people have watched these dramas across the country. The two plays of 45 minutes each were in Hindi but the teachers and the students did not find it difficult to understand as their artistic skills conveyed all that they wanted to express. The first play Panch Parmeshwar stressed on the need to be fair in our relationship and business dealings. In this play the friendship of a Muslim and a Hindu is highlighted. A panchayat is called to solve village disputes and the one who is chosen as the `panch` cannot go wrong in his verdict even if it is to the disappointment of one`s friend. As soon as he sits on the panch`s seat he gets divinised and announces justice. The second play Amaanat focused on communal harmony based on the short story `Mandir-Masjid` by Premchand. It revolves around Chaudhury Itarat Ali, a rich Muslim landlord who is religious and generous to the poor. The selfish elements in the society with vested interests, try their level best to fan communal feelings and cause riot between the Hindus and the Muslims. Chaudhury saves the situation by putting his own life at stake. He proves that the places of worship are equally important for all and that human relationship is more important than one`s own community. The Principal of SCS, Fr George Thadathil SDB felicitated them at the end with traditional Nepali khadas and appreciated their performance in the college. The troupe is scheduled to visit other educational institutions of the hill district in the coming days.
