SALESIANS AT THE THE XAVIER BOARD TRIENNIAL
The 19th triennial of the Xavier Board of Education took place at Christ College, Bangalore from 21-24 May 2007 and was attended by 180 participants comprising of management representatives, principals, staff and students. The Salesians were effectively represented with the participation of twleve Confreres.
Among the 12 Salesians at the triennial convention Fr Kuriala Chittattukalam sdb, the secretary of the CBCI commission for Education, is an ex-officio member and Fr VV Abraham sdb, the secretary for Education Commission of the SPCSA, was a special invitee as resource person. The others were principals from the South and the North East provinces.
The theme for the triennial was ``Campus Culture in Catholic Higher Education Institutions`` and it studied in depth the findings of a survey conducted nationwide on the prevailing campus culture. The 8 recommendations, following on the 8 factors that were studied as defining the campus provided the roadmap for the coming three years. The major area of focus will be creating network, strengthening the social dimension and dissemination of values and enchancing the capabilities of the teaching faculty.
The keynote was presented by His Grace Archbishop Thomas Menamparambil sdb, Archbishop of Guwahati. His address set the tone for the conference as it highlighted the problems and prospects before the personnel involved in higher education.
Three salesians have been elected into the Board which meets annually: Fr CM Varghese sdb (Chennai), Fr Jose Palely sdb (Dimapur), and Fr George Thadathil sdb (Kolkata) who is also an Executive Committee member.
The Xavier Board of Higher Education is a 57 year old association initially begun by the Jesuit colleges of India. Over the years it has come to have a national character comprising of majority of the catholic colleges run by the dioceses, or religious institutes of men and women. It has a current membership of 218 and is still growing.
