The Youth Animation Department of SCS (Salesian College, Sonada. Darjeeling) led by the Youth Animator, Fr Francis Gomes sdb organized the Annual Youth Inter-Faith Payer and Mass on 30 March, 2008. About 325 youth participated in it from 24 out of 27 youth centres managed or run by the Brothers (Philosophy students) of the College. The theme for the day was `shantilai ek mauka daeu (Give Peace a Chance)`.
The programme started at 10.15 am with oratory wise assembly of the youth, the hoisting of the Don Bosco flag and the release of a pigeon by Fr Tomy Augustine sdb, Rector of SCS and Fr Patrick Pradhan SJ, Director, Hayden Hall, Darjeeling. Fr Patrick was the chief guest of the day and also the main celebrant for the Eucharistic celebration. At 10.30 am a computer power point visual was screened with messages and pictures depicting the need to maintain peace. Various war pictures and its effect on society were projected along with ahimsa and peace quotes of people like Gandhi and Mother Teresa. At 11.00 am all the participants moved on to the College chapel for the Mass. A group of Auxilium girls from St Mary`s, Kurseong performed the entrance dance for the Mass and also presented a skit with gospel based message just prior to the Gospel reading and the homily. Fr Patrick quite well expounded the theme of peace in his homily. After the lunch, a Nepali film named `Naya Goreto (New Road)` was screened. The story based on the need to see others as one`s own showed the importance of being in harmony with oneself and with others. After the screening of the film there was the prize distribution ceremony for the best youth of the year 2007-2008 from each centre. The criterion for evaluating this was attendance and active involvement of the individual in the youth centre. The prizes were handed over by Fr George Thadathil sdb, the Principal of SCS. The programme ended at 4.00 pm so the youngsters could return home before dusk as some had come from villages as far as fifteen-twenty kilometers. It was an educative experience for the youth as they not only felt the need for peace but also prayed for peace and harmony in the region and for the country.
