Karnataka Youth honour Don Bosco in his Bicentenary

A youth convention attended by nearly 1000 people from all over Karnataka was held from 6 to 8 February 2015, during which ecclesiastical and political leaders joined the youth in paying glowing tribute to Don Bosco in this bicentenary year of his birth.
On the first two days the convention was organized according to the principal youth pastoral settings of the province. About 350 Young People at Risk met at Don Bosco, Tumkur, and studied and reflected on issues such as child rights, menaces of child labour, and child marriage. Nearly 250 young people involved in skill training gathered at Don Bosco, Hospet. About 75 youngsters from Salesian parishes in Karnataka celebrated their Christian faith at Don Bosco, Davangere. School students, hostel inmates, and members of Bosco Youth Groups met at Don Bosco, Chitradurga. At each venue half of the input sessions were on Don Bosco while the other half were on topics relevant to their own specific setting. Quiz on Don Bosco and competition in a specific item of fine arts related to Don Bosco were held at all the venues. For the concluding function on 8 February, the participants of all the youth pastoral settings gathered at Don Bosco, Chitradurga. In the first session that began at 10.00 AM, the youth were enlightened on life of Don Bosco through entertaining cultural items as well as information sharing. The public function at 11.30 AM was presided over by Fr. Mathew Thonikuzhiyil, the new provincial of Bangalore Province. Mr H. Anjaneya, Minister of Social Welfare, Government of Karnataka, as the chief guest of the function, lauded the contribution of Christian missionaries in the field of education especially of the poorer and reiterated the secular fabric of India. Fr. Thomas Koonan, the Vice-Provincial, briefed the assembly on the life of Don Bosco and alerted the assembly on the adverse consequences of corruption and allegations of forced conversion which dampen the spirit of generous and selfless Christian nation builders. Rev. Fr. Felix Joseph Noronha, the Vicar General of the Diocese of Shimoga, in his message emphasized the value of prayer in the life of the young. Fr. Thomas Anchukandam, the former provincial of the Province, and Mr Fathyrajan, District Congress President of Chitradurga, too addressed the gathering. The function was intertwined with cultural items carrying thought provoking messages. Fr. Maria Anand SDB, the regional Salesian youth director who was the chief coordinator of the event. The convention while helping the participants to understand better St. John Bosco, was a fitting tribute to this great Saint in the bicentenary of his birth.
