The Salesians working in Nepal have made timely interventions during natural calamities in the past. Each of the seven Salesian presences in Nepal has helped several hundred families in the immediate neighbourhood and nearby villages and school children. They are attempting a similar act of solidarity during the second phase of the Covid pandemic, said Father Augusty Pulickal, the Coordinator of Nepal Mission. The Covid Centre has 19 occupants currently. Several have returned home, cured by the medical care given here. The municipality with a population of 78,301 has about 875 active Covid cases and has lost 37 people to the pandemic. Father Augusty has assured the Mayor of making provisions available to the needy of the municipality during this trying time. The Covid situation in Nepal is worsening quicker compared to the first wave. In the last 15 days, there had been an increase of 102104 cases and 2271 deaths in Nepal. The country has been on an extended lockdown, with all the malls and grocery shops closed for a week. Although advised to gather grocery and provisions for a week in advance, the daily labourers are at a loss as they couldn`t afford to buy provisions at one go for a whole week. The Salesians first came to Nepal in 1922. Currently, there are 21 Salesians, all hailing from the five Indian provinces, engaged in the mission. They won the appreciation of the Nepal Government for the relief works and reconstruction of 10 Primary and Secondary schools after the devastating earthquakes of 2015. The seven communities are into several social development projects in the country.
