VOICES FROM DON BOSCO BAR

23 March 2008
- C. M. Paul
ROME, 22 March - The Holy week dibatito (discussions) from the aula magna spilled over into the neighbouring Don Bosco Bar a floor below, the veritable GC26 watering hole... Any news monger, with an astute nose for news, would have a field day hanging around!
The Indian Contribution I cannot elaborate too much on the contributions of Indians at the Chapter, because I do not know to what extent it is wise at this moment to say who said what in the hall and in the commissions... I was already twice cautioned on reporting ``sensitive issues``. But one thing I can say. On the topic of evangelization the Indians, particularly those who have been teaching in the theologates have been vociferous. In general the Indians who speak call to attention that all the areas of the world must see themselves in the document. The general tone of the document so far seems to be more Euro-centric rather than universal in tone and outlook. The problems the GC assembly pose and the solutions it comes up with are mostly European in nature. And I can understand that. What is marvellous is, people from other parts of the world are waking up. For example, while the Europeans speak of new forms of poverty. The Indians and Latin Americans ask: What happened to old poverty? Much of the world still suffers under and injustice and denial of human rights! Immigration is not the only problem now! When Europe unconsciously speaks of ``young people``, the rest speak of ``young people who are the poorest and those who are most in need.`` In all this, interestingly, our Constitutions seem to be more relevant than ever. Reading them calls our attention back to the basics! Photo Caption: GC26 catching up with unfinished agenda.
