Kolkata, Nov. 24. After almost 28 years of Salesian presence in the Mirik Valley, in Darjeeling District, Don Bosco, Mirik was fully recognized and upgraded to a high school at 3.00 pm, on November 23, 2009 by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education.
For the past three years, Fr. VC Jose, the Headmaster had been relentlessly working on its recognition. The process of recognition began long back in 1989 with Fr. George Alakulam, the pioneer missionary of Mirik and was later picked up by Fr. Vincent Valiaveetil, Fr. Augusty Pulickal, Fr. Martin Lakra, Fr. Pius Kerketta, Fr. KV James and Fr. George Thirumalachalil. In the year 2005, Don Bosco, Mirik was recognized as a Junior High School up to Class VIII.

Don Bosco, Mirik a co-educational school has a strength of over 570 students, with equal number of boys and girls hailing from the tea-gardens and busties of Mirik Valley. Although the situation in the valley is volatile due to political instability, Don Bosco School stands tall among the other schools of Mirik, as a prime institution that imparts quality education to the poor and underprivileged children.

The school building took shape gradually over the years.  A new wing with modern amenities was built in 2008, with the assistance of the friends of Late Fr. Luigi Jellici. The old residence of the Salesians and the boarding of the boys are renovated and extended, due for blessing tomorrow, at 2.00 pm, November 25, 2009.

The Salesian Community at Mirik gratefully recognizes the services of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, the support and prayers of the Salesian confreres and well wishers, and the generous contribution of our friends who have stood for the cause of the poor and the marginalized.
