Shillong Salesians Pray for Peace in Manipur

- Michael Makri sdb

The Salesians of the Shillong Province under the leadership of Father Barnes Mawrie and Father Michael Makri organized a prayer concert on July 9 to pray for peace in Manipur, which has seen sporadic violence since May 3, 2023, and is still on.

The ethnic clash erupted in the state of Manipur on May 3, between the Meitei group of people, a majority that lives in the Imphal Valley, and the tribal community from the surrounding hills, including the Kuki and Zo peoples. Since then the clash is worsened and many people have been killed, and many more are left wounded, displaced and in refugee camps. In solidarity with those affected by the ethnic clash, various church groups and organizations prayed and begged that peace might be restored. In this connection, the Salesians of the Shillong Province organized a prayer concert on July 9 to pray for peace in Manipur.

The concert was held at the Father Sngi Memorial Hall in Sacred Heart Theological College Mawlai. Mr Charles Pynrope MLA from Nongthymmai was the Chief Guest and Father Paul O Lyngkot, the Provincial, was the Guest of honour. Father Sunil Barla and Rev. Dr Kharkongor were speakers for the Peace Prayer Concert. As many as one thousand participants from the Salesian Family took part in the concert which was aired live by Don Bosco Media Network on YouTube, Local Cable Network and OTT. The concert was a moment of prayer, music and dance to implore the blessing of God that peace might be restored in Manipur.
