Where Calling Meets Career: Young Salesians Trained to Accompany Youth Dreams
Blending faith with future-readiness, the Province of St Joseph, Hyderabad, organized a Career Guidance Training Program for the quinquennium batch Salesians at Don Bosco Provincial House on July 21–22. The two-day seminar aimed to equip young priests with the tools and perspectives necessary to accompany youth in their vocational and career journeys.
The training was facilitated by two esteemed resource persons: Fr. Selvaraj SDB, professor of psychology at Sacred Heart College, and Fr. Gabriel SDB, National Coordinator of the Job Placement Network (JPN). Together, they led the participants through an engaging programme that married psychological insight with practical career guidance.
Day One focused on the psychological development of adolescents, with Fr. Selvaraj highlighting the importance of understanding emotional, motivational, and identity-formation patterns in teenagers. “The developmental years are crucial,” he noted. “Knowing how teens think and feel enables us to be truly present and meaningful companions.”
He also introduced the core principles of career guidance, sharing key counselling tools and techniques designed to support young people dealing with stress, uncertainty, and social pressure in career decision-making.
Fr. Gabriel brought in a dynamic pastoral perspective with the “Gift–Passion–Value Framework,” urging Salesians to help young people identify their natural talents, align them with their passions, and ground their aspirations in strong values. He emphasized the importance of connecting faith, vocation, and career discernment, making youth ministry a bridge to real-world purpose and direction.
On Day Two, the focus shifted to hands-on strategies. Sessions covered career options after 10th and 12th grades, competitive exams, government job avenues, and the integration of localized career guidance modules in schools and parish settings. The programme aimed to help Salesians become not just spiritual mentors but career-aware companions, ready to guide youth through today’s complex and evolving job landscape.
The seminar concluded with a reflection session led by the Provincial, affirming the province’s commitment to holistic youth development. The initiative marks a vital step in forming Salesians who are emotionally attuned, spiritually grounded, and practically equipped to accompany young people in discovering their life’s calling and career path.
