Teachers of Mawryngkneng Parish Trained on Media and AI in Education
Don Bosco Media Network (DBMN) Television, led by Fr. Michael Makri, Managing Director of the Salesian Province of St. John Paul II, Shillong, conducted a seminar-cum-training program on "The Impact of Media and Artificial Intelligence in Education " for teachers of the Parish of Mawryngkneng.
The one-day programme, held for all Secondary and higher secondary schools under the parish, brought together 87 teachers, representing two higher secondary schools and six Secondary Schools. With nearly 93 percent participation, it was hailed as a milestone for the local education community.
The day began with a prayer and welcome address by Parish Priest Fr. Khongsit, who stressed the need for educators to adapt to the rapid digital transformation in education. The sessions opened with a discussion on the role of both traditional and social media in shaping learning, especially in rural and urban contexts. A practical, hands-on training in the use of nearly 10 Artificial Intelligence tools, including ChatGPT and Wix, designed to help teachers streamline lesson planning, enhance classroom engagement, and improve learning outcomes.
Fr. Makri highlighted the significance of embracing technology, stating, "AI will not replace teachers, but teachers who know how to use AI will be loved and remembered by their students. Today's Gen Z and Gen Alpha are born into a world of technology. To guide them, educators must step into their world, because a blind person cannot lead another blind person."
Teachers expressed their appreciation for the training, many noting that the day was too short for such a vital subject. They thanked Fr. Khongsit for initiating the programme. They conveyed their gratitude to Fr. Makri and his team for imparting skills that would help them navigate the challenges of the digital age in education.
