The annual meeting of the South Asia Formation Commission (SAFC) began on a reflective and resolute note at the Don Bosco Provincial House, Odxel, Goa, on August 1. The gathering brought together Formation Delegates and Vice Provincials from all Salesian Provinces across South Asia for a period of prayerful discernment, evaluation, and strategic planning.

A solemn Eucharistic celebration marked the opening ceremony presided over by Fr. Silvio Roggia SDB, General Councillor for Formation. In his homily, Fr. Roggia reminded participants of the shared mission that lies at the heart of Salesian formation. “Formation is the responsibility of every Salesian,” he affirmed, urging the delegates to become co-creators in helping young people discern and pursue their divine vocations.
Delivering the welcome address, Fr. Clive Telles SDB, Provincial of the Panjim Province, set the tone for the deliberations with a note of urgency and hope. “You have the responsibility to show us the way,” he said, emphasizing the importance of vocation-animation in the life of the congregation.

In his keynote address, Fr. Roggia praised the vibrant Salesian spirit evident among the participants and invited them to draw inspiration from Don Bosco’s passionate commitment to the young. He expressed confidence that the days ahead would be filled with grace, encouraging bold reflection and action in the area of formation.

The spiritual momentum continued with Bro. Raymond Callo SDB, leading the group in Lectio Divina, grounding the commission in Scripture and communal prayer. This contemplative beginning paved the way for the business sessions that followed.

Fr. Banzelao Teixeira SDB, SAFC Coordinator, presented the annual report, highlighting progress on the implementation of the Lines of Action for 2024–2025 and focusing on the specific mission of the Salesian Brother, Bro. James Markus SDB, SPCSA Delegate for the Salesian Brothers, shared updates on the SA-Salesian Brothers’ Congress resolutions. He drew attention to pressing concerns regarding the promotion, holistic formation, and sustenance of Salesian Brother vocations—an essential dimension of the Salesian charism.

The day concluded with an engaging session led by Fr. Ashley Miranda SDB, Provincial-designate of Mumbai, who presented a reflection titled GC29 – A Formation Perspective. Group discussions followed, allowing participants to share insights and synthesize responses through their respective group secretaries.

As the SAFC meeting continues, its members remain steadfast in their mission—to shape Salesians who are deeply anchored in Christ, dynamically responsive to the signs of the times, and passionately committed to accompanying young people, especially the most marginalized.
