Salesians Lead Swift Flood Relief for Hyderabad Families After Sudden Deluge
In a swift humanitarian response following last month’s devastating floods in Hyderabad, the Salesian Province of St. Joseph, Hyderabad, in collaboration with the Don Bosco Network (DBN), delivered critical relief to hundreds of displaced families over the weekend.
On Sunday, October 13, a total of 600 relief kits were distributed to flood-affected households, thanks to a coordinated effort between Bosco Seva Kendra (BSK) — the Planning and Development Office of the Salesian INH Province — and an alliance of local and international partners.
The emergency support came in the wake of torrential rainfall and the sudden release of water from the Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar reservoirs, which inundated densely populated, low-lying neighborhoods such as Moosarambagh, Chaderghat, and parts of the Old City. The deluge forced thousands from their homes and brought vital infrastructure, including the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS), to a standstill.
The distribution drive was bolstered by global Salesian organizations including Missiones Salesianas (JyD), Missioni Don Bosco Torino, Don Bosco Jugendhilfe Weltweit (DBJuWe), Don Bosco Mission Austria, and others from Ireland, France, Poland, Slovakia, Malta, and South Korea. Local support came from the Conference of Religious India (CRI) – Hyderabad Unit and St. Montfort (PIN) School.
Spearheaded by Fr Thomas Santiagu, SDB, the Salesian Provincial and DBN teams worked closely with school teachers, CRI members, and civil society organizations to ensure the relief reached the most affected communities efficiently.
“The initiative was not just about delivering kits — it was about restoring hope and dignity,” said one local volunteer. Community members praised the Salesians for their rapid and compassionate response, calling it a “true embodiment of solidarity in action.”
As Hyderabad begins the long road to recovery, the Salesian-led relief operation stands as a testament to the power of faith-driven humanitarian action in times of crisis.
