Salesians Empower 1,200 Young Women at International Youth Day Celebration in Kurnool

About 1,200 girl students took part in an International Youth Day 2026 celebration organised by the JMJ Subodha Centre, Pastoral and Evangelisation Centre, at St Joseph’s College for Women, JMJ Nagar, Kurnool-2, on August 7. The Salesians of the Hyderabad Province animated the programme, which focused on empowering young women to understand their rights, address contemporary challenges and contribute to a more inclusive society.

Held under the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” the celebration highlighted how young people from diverse social, cultural and economic backgrounds share aspirations for dignity, equality, education, opportunity and a better future.

Fr Muthyala Sudhaakar SDB delivered the keynote address, encouraging students to reflect on the varied realities of young people and the aspirations that unite them. Fr Simharayalu SDB spoke on women’s rights and constitutional safeguards, creating awareness of the legal protections available to women and stressing the importance of understanding and exercising these rights responsibly.

Fr P. Justin SDB, Youth Director, led a session on the digital divide and social connectivity, examining the opportunities offered by digital technology and the challenges created by unequal access. He encouraged students to use digital platforms responsibly while preserving meaningful human relationships and social connections.

An interactive workshop formed a major part of the celebration. Students discussed the opportunities and challenges confronting women in contemporary society, sharing their perspectives and listening to diverse viewpoints. The discussions encouraged reflection on the role of young women in shaping society.

The programme featured a youth commitment, prize distribution, concluding reflections and a felicitation ceremony, followed by expressions of gratitude and the National Anthem. It concluded with lunch.

The event conveyed a message of hope and responsibility, summed up in its motto: “Hope in every Heart, Light in every Life.” This motto captured the spirit of the celebration and left a lasting note of inspiration.
