Salesian Youth Leaders Chart Path for Future at South Asia Regional Meet
The Regional Meeting of Social Experience and Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) Coordinators of South Asia convened at the Don Bosco Institute for Development and Leadership (DBIDL), Dimapur, on June 27–28, gathering youth ministry leaders from across the region for two days of reflection, collaboration, and planning.
The event, hosted by the Salesian Province of Dimapur, aimed to review ongoing youth ministry initiatives, share best practices, and define strategic goals for the years ahead. Fr. Joseph Pampackal SDB, Provincial of Dimapur, inaugurated the gathering with a prayer, invoking divine blessings on the proceedings. Fr. Theotimus Lakra SDB, Director of DBIDL, formally welcomed the delegates, acknowledging their dedication to youth empowerment. A cultural welcome by students of Auxilium boarding set a warm and festive tone for the meeting.
In his opening address, Fr. Patrick Lepcha, SDB, SPCSA Delegate for Youth Ministry, outlined the objectives of the gathering and invited participants to a shared process of discernment and collaboration. A keynote presentation delivered virtually by Fr. Joebeth Vivo SDB from Rome, the Global SYM Coordinator and East Asia Oceania Youth Pastoral Ministry Coordinator, underscored the central theme of Responsibility. Fr. Vivo urged South Asian leaders to take a proactive role in shaping youth leadership and nurturing the Salesian identity.
Provincial representatives presented reports on current youth activities and strategies, highlighting both success stories and pressing challenges. This session served as a platform for mutual learning and critical reflection.
The second day featured a review of the key outcomes of the February 2025 online meeting, presented by Fr. Lepcha, followed by a deep dive into the theme “Education to Love”—a values-based framework for holistic youth formation. They also examined the updated documents on youth and family ministry to ensure alignment with global Salesian priorities.
A significant discussion centred on the SYM Synod Final Document, which captured the aspirations and concerns of youth across the Salesian world. Delegates reflected on the implications for regional programming and evaluated the impact of recent SYMFEST events, proposing innovative approaches for future editions.
The meeting concluded with the formulation of a clear roadmap for 2025–2026. Participants identified three key areas of focus:
• Enhanced youth accompaniment through structured mentorship and guidance;
• Promotion of social awareness via integration of social justice themes into formation;
• Strengthening family engagement by embedding family-centric approaches in youth ministry programs.
The gathering reaffirmed the Salesian commitment to walk alongside young people, equipping them with values, vision, and a voice in building a more compassionate and just society.
