SPCSA Assembly Opens in Bangalore to Forge Six-Year Regional Plan
The Salesian Provincial Conference of South Asia (SPCSA) Assembly commenced on July 8 at the Don Bosco Skill Mission (DBSM), Bangalore, bringing together 55 participants, including Provincials, delegates, sector heads, and invited observers for a two-day deliberation on the future direction of the Salesian mission in the region.
The Salesian Province of Bangalore is hosting the Assembly in collaboration with DBSM. Fr Jose Koyickal, Provincial of the Bangalore Province, welcomed the participants with the traditional Karnataka shawl and the headgear "Mysuru Peta", setting a warm and culturally rooted tone for the gathering.
The inaugural Eucharist was presided over by Fr Biju Michael, Regional Councillor for South Asia and President of SPCSA. In his homily, he called on the members to be "fruitful", emphasizing that it is through fruitfulness that the Salesian mission gives glory to God. During his introductory address, Fr Biju urged members to engage in shaping the six-year plan for the South Asia Region post-General Chapter 29 (GC29), using the method of 'Conversation in the Spirit'. The objective, he stated, is to study the major decisions of GC29 and identify focus areas for Salesian life and mission from 2025 to 2031.
A key highlight of the Assembly was an online address by the Rector Major, Fr Fabio Attard. Reflecting on 'Mary arose and went with haste' (Luke 1:39), he emphasized three essential attitudes—listening, availability, and generosity. He encouraged the Assembly to embody the prophetic dimension of their vocation rather than merely functioning as service providers. Cautioning against the unchecked influence of Artificial Intelligence, the Rector Major advocated its use for education and evangelization.
Sector reports were presented during the Assembly, with each session moderated by the respective sector-in-charge Provincials. The proceedings were coordinated by Fr. John Parankimalil, SPCSA Secretary, ensuring a structured and fruitful exchange of ideas throughout the sessions.
The Assembly will continue on July 9, with discussions expected to focus on strategic planning, regional collaboration, and the deeper integration of Salesian values in contemporary mission contexts.
