Renovated St Anne’s Church at Ahilyanagar Blessed, Marks Renewal of Faith
News reported by: Fr Nathaneal George
Emphasising the spiritual role of sacred spaces—“directed to the infinite and seeking to lead a person’s mind devoutly to God” (cf. Sacrosanctum Concilium, 122)—the renovated façade of St Anne’s Church at Ahilyanagar now stands as a striking symbol of faith, unity, and renewal. More than a structural upgrade, the renovation reflects the parish community’s collective commitment to spiritual growth and shared belonging.
The origins of the parish date back to 1986, when William Falcao SDB, along with a small group of pioneers, initiated pastoral work in what was then known as Ahmednagar. Their mission began at St John’s, Bhingar, the principal parish in the cantonment area. As the Catholic population gradually increased, efforts to establish a dedicated parish bore fruit in 1992 with the acquisition of land that previously housed the Sacred Heart Convent School. This site later evolved into the present St Anne’s Church campus.
Established to serve the faithful of Nagar town—many with ties to the Army Cantonment at Bhingar—St Anne’s Parish has, over the past three decades, developed into a vibrant and active Catholic community from its humble beginnings.
A new phase began in May 2025 when Fr McEnroe Lopes SDB assumed office as Rector and Parish Priest. Confronted with the church’s deteriorating condition due to inclement weather, he initiated renovation plans. The proposal quickly received strong support from parishioners who had long recognised the need for restoration. The renovation, which commenced in December 2025, encompassed the sanctuary and interior spaces, as well as extensive civil and electrical upgrades.
The parish reached a significant milestone on April 25, 2026, when 34 students from the parish and neighbouring villages received the Sacrament of Confirmation. The renovated church was solemnly blessed by Bishop Barthol Barretto of the Catholic Diocese of Nashik. The celebration was attended by Fr Ashley Miranda SDB, Provincial, along with other invited guests. The occasion also marked the first Eucharistic celebration in the refurbished church after several months.
Reflecting on the initiative, Fr McEnroe Lopes noted that the faithful deserve a sacred space that fosters deeper participation in worship and facilitates an encounter with God in prayer. He expressed satisfaction in contributing to the life of the parish through this endeavour.
The renovation of St Anne’s Church stands as a testament to the community’s enduring faith, their trust in divine providence, and the Church’s ongoing journey of renewal across generations.
