Rector Major Addresses Salesian Family at Katpadi, Calls for Renewed Salesian Identity

News reported by: Fr. John Britto and Fr. Anto John

The Salesian Family came together on the evening of February 15 at Don Bosco, Katpadi, for a moment of prayer, reflection, and communion centred on the presence of the Rector Major, Fr. Fabio Attard, SDB. The gathering highlighted the unity and vitality of the Salesian charism as members from across its diverse branches assembled around their spiritual leader.

The programme opened in a prayerful atmosphere and was enlivened by cultural presentations that expressed the dynamism and joy characteristic of the Salesian spirit. Representatives from the various branches of the Salesian Family—including the SDB, FMA, SMA, ASC, ADMA, Past Pupils, VDB, CDB, and the Disciples of Jesus—participated, reflecting the richness and diversity of the shared mission inspired by St. John Bosco.

Addressing the gathering, the Rector Major called for renewed, deeper reflection on Salesian identity. He stressed that authentic love for Don Bosco must be rooted in a profound knowledge of his life, spirit, and mission. Emphasizing that the Salesian charism is a gift of the Holy Spirit, he urged the Family to live it with seriousness and authenticity, fostering both spiritual depth and qualitative growth as the movement continues to expand. Reflecting on the Strenna theme, “Do Whatever He Tells You,” he invited those present to imitate Mary at Cana by learning to look, listen, discern, and act, placing their gifts generously in the hands of Jesus with trust and openness.

A significant moment of the evening was the presentation of certificates to the first batch of delegates of the Salesian Lay Leadership Programme (SLLP). The initiative, inspired by Fr. Fabio Attard two years ago, aims to form lay leaders for co-responsibility in the Salesian mission, in keeping with the vision of GC 28. The two-year formative programme was designed and implemented by Don Bosco Kalvi Solai with the guidance of a dedicated team of Salesian formators and educators, marking an important step in strengthening lay participation in the mission.

Earlier in the day, the Rector Major also visited the Auxilium College, where he met with the FMA Sisters. In his message, he highlighted community life as a precious gift meant to be a living sign of joy, hope, and trust. He noted that when love and sharing are authentically lived, the mission naturally flourishes. Entrusting the sisters to Mary Help of Christians, he encouraged them to renew their vocation with fresh zeal, confidence, and missionary commitment.
