The Don Bosco National Forum for the Young at Risk (YaR) inaugurated a two-day national conference at the Don Bosco Institute (DBI), Kharghuli, bringing together community leaders, youth workers, and child protection experts to strengthen the support system for vulnerable children and youth.

Themed “Engaging with Community and Youth Leaders to Create an Enabling Ecosystem for Young at Risk,” the conference seeks to address the multifaceted challenges faced by children on the margins and develop sustainable, community-driven solutions.

The inaugural ceremony began with a traditional prayer dance by DBI students, followed by the lighting of the lamp by dignitaries. Participants observed a moment of tribute to the late cultural icon Zubeen Garg.

Dr. Madhulika Jonathan, Chief of the UNICEF Field Office in Guwahati, served as Chief Guest and delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility in child protection.

“The well-being of every child is our collective responsibility. It is through strengthened partnerships and community-led initiatives that we can create a safe and nurturing environment for the young at risk,” she said.

Fr. Sebastian Kuricheal SDB, Provincial of the Guwahati Province and Guest of Honour, extended a warm welcome to delegates, reaffirming the Salesian mission’s enduring commitment to the welfare of at-risk youth. The conference was officially opened following an introductory address by Fr. Joe Prabu SDB, Executive Director of the DB YaR Forum.

The first day featured thematic sessions on key issues, including “Strengthening Community-based Child Protection and Safety Ecosystems” by Dr. Sangita Mahanta and “Mapping and Leveraging Community Assets for Youth Empowerment and Resilience” by Ms. Enakshi Dutta.

An exhibition of children’s artwork titled “Uphold our Hopes, Unfold our Dreams” poignantly reflected their aspirations and resilience. This was followed by a panel discussion on the Salesian Family’s role in the YaR mission and a talk by Fr. Joseph Manippadeth on Catholic education as a tool for poverty alleviation. The day ended with the YaR Award Ceremony, honouring exceptional contributors to the cause.

The second day focused on youth leadership, featuring sessions such as “Community-led Mobilization on Substance Use” by Dr. Lavinia Lyngdoh and “Youth Voices” led by Fr. Dr. John Parankimalli. The valedictory session, graced by Chief Guest Mr. Partha Trathim Mazumdar, Secretary to the Government of Assam, Department of Women and Child Development, marked the close of the conference.

The event concluded with the Silver Jubilee celebration of the Snehalaya Centre, commemorating 25 years of tireless service in championing child rights in the region.
